Housing & Facilities

The academic part of the Summer Literary Seminarss in St. Petersburg program (classes and lectures) will take place at the venerable Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, less than a minute's walk from Nevsky Prospekt. Participants will be housed in the Herzen University Inn, which is in the adjacent building. Breakfast is included. Photocopying services will be offered. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops. (Please note: electrical outlets in Russia are 220V. You will need to bring plug adapters for all your electrical appliances, such as laptop computers. These adapters are available at most any electronics stores in the US.)

The Herzen Inn is the hotel operated by the Herzen University. It is essentially a two-star hotel located in the very heart of the heart of St. Petersburg, within a block's walking distance to various restuarants, Internet cafes, Nevsky Prospekt (the famous throughfare in St. Petersburg), the magnificient Kazansky Cathedral and Church of the Savior on the Spilt Blood, and the bustling Nevsky metro stop. The Inn features a restaurant and a cafe, full-service laundry, a convenience store, and 24-hour security. All rooms in the Herzen Inn have a refrigerator and many have televisions and radios. A group of very able, English-speaking SLS assistants will be available to assist participants with their needs at the Inn at all times.

In addition to the Herzen Inn SLS houses participants in nearby dorms on the campus of the Herzen University. Participants may also choose to stay in comfortable, centrally-located apartments where one will have a room of his/her own and share the kitchen and the bathroom. However, we recommend this option only for those students who either have some familiarity with the city of St. Petersburg or a conversational grasp of the Russian language. It is a more independent housing arrangement requiring a one- to two-stop metro or bus ride to the Herzen Inn.

Please note: The Herzen Inn, the dormitories, and all dwellings Russian Version cities, occassionaly experience outages in the hot water during the Summer for periods of time as short as a couple days, as long as a month.
