Travel & Visa Matters | FAQNAIROBI
The Nairobi portion of the program (daily workshops, lectures, roundtable discussions, and the new SLS Kenya Between the Lines Program) will take place in conference rooms at the Kivi Milimani Hotel — in the upscale Westlands area of the city. Photocopying services will be offered; computer facilities will be available. Wireless internet is available throughout the hotel for a fee. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops. Most participants will choose to stay at the Milimani while in Nairobi, with rooms offered at SLS discounted rates: around US$60-65 a night for single, $50 for shared accommodations (2 people). Additionally, there are five star options available in the vicinity and can be arranged through our SLS affiliated travel agent. The hotel comes with breakfast included, as do most other hotels in Nairobi.
Should anyone wish to stay elsewhere in Nairobi, this must be cleared with the program administrators. Please note that for safety/security reasons, we discourage participants from staying anywhere other than the Milimani Hotel, unless a participant has prior experience in Nairobi.
LAMU
For the second part of the program we'll be on Lamu island. There is
a range of housing options there, mostly because there isn't a single hotel that can accommodate a group our size. However, everything on Lamu is within short walking distance. We'll be arranging housing for all participants; most of the hotels have very similar amenties, and as a general rule, the more expensive a room, the more "westernized" it is. These hotels range between about $35-$60 a night, which includes breakfast. Other, more expensive options are available — and again, one can walk the expanse of Lamu town in approximately ten to fifteen minutes!
Please bear in mind that while we'll do everything we can to get everyone into the price range and type of accommodation they request, all rooms are subject to availability.
On Safari
On safari, expect to pay anywhere from $90-$300 a day, depending on accommodations, number of parks visited, meals, etc. These will also be arranged, at special SLS discounted rates, by our on-site agent.
