Housing & Facilities

The more intensely academic portion of the program (daily workshops, lectures, roundtable discussions), will take place in conference rooms at the Heron Hotel near the city center of Nairobi. Photocopying services will be offered; computer facilities will be available. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops.

Most participants will choose to stay at the Heron Hotel while in Nairobi, with rooms offered at SLS discounted rates: around US$50 a night for a basic room, around $35 a night for shared accommodations, and around $80 a night for rooms in the newly remodeled/updated area of the hotel; additionally, there are five star options available in the vicinity and can be arranged through our SLS-affiliated travel agent. The Heron Hotel comes with breakfast included, as do most other hotels in Nairobi.

Should anyone wish to stay elsewhere in Nairobi, this must be cleared with the program director. Also, please note that for safety/security reasons, we discourage participants from staying anywhere other than thbe Heron Hotel unless a participant has prior experience in Kenya or East Africa.

For the second week of the program we'll be on Lamu island--there are a range of housing ptions, on Lamu, mostly because there isn't a single hotel that can accommodate a group even half our size. We'll be arranging housing for all participants; most of the hotels have very similar amenties, and as a general rule the more expensive a room, the more "westernized" it is. These hotels range between about $35-$60 a night, which includes breakfast. Other, more expensive options are available--and keep in mind that one can walk the expanse of Lamu town in approximately ten minutes!

Please bear in mind that while we'll do everything we can to get everyone into the price range and type of accommodation they request, all rooms are subject to availability.

On safari, expect to pay anywhere from $90-$300 a day, depending on accommodations, number of parks visited, meals, etc. These will also be arranged, at special SLS discounted rates, by our on-site agent.
