We had so much fun in the spring, we're doing it again in the fall! SLS will once again be hosting workshops in our hometown of Montreal as part of an ongoing series of mini-programs! Join Summer Literary Seminars for this 4-day intensive event (October 2 to 5), to be held in a city like no other.
Montreal is a city rich in literary tradition. Leonard Cohen, Anne Carson, Mordecai Richler, Irving Layton, Gabrielle Roy, and Mavis Gallant are among those who have called the city both home and inspiration. It is a city European in its manner, North America's virtual portal to Europe. A place where old meets new, where English meets French. It is city of many cultures that when put together create something beautiful, unique, and in and of itself literary.
Our fiction workshop will be led by acclaimed writer Heather O'Neill, finalist for the Orange Prize and Governor General's Award. Our poetry workshop will be led by the internationally celebrated poet Brenda Shaughnessy, winner of the PEN/Open Book Award, and the Lambda Literary Award, among other honours. Our mixed genre workshop will be led by Mikhail Iossel, award-winning writer and founder of SLS, as well as a regular contributor to The New Yorker. The 4-day intensive program will also feature lectures and readings from some of Montreal’s finest writers.
SLS, in existence since 1998, is a program like no other: remarkably innovative and dynamic, and the only operating on three continents. Over the years, it has counted more than 1000 participants in its programs. Participants in the writing seminars will include individuals of all ages and all levels of accomplishment: gifted beginners and writers who have already begun publishing; undergraduate and graduate students of creative writing; and people turning (or returning) to writing relatively late in life.
All are treated with equal respect by the SLS faculty and writers-in-residence. Please bear in mind: One does not have to be an accomplished writer to attend Summer Literary Seminars: an abiding love of literature, intellectual curiosity, openness to new artistic and cultural experiences, and the sincere desire to deepen one's understanding of the creative process are the only prerequisites.
Space in the program is LIMITED. The cost is $395. We encourage you to register soon, as places will fill up quickly.
SLS is proud to invite you to its beautiful hometown.
